What is Silhouette?

Our impression of an outfit when it emerges on the catwalk is formed by it,s silhouette ,which means that we looks at it overall shape before have interrogate the details, fabric or texture of the garment.
Silhouette is a fundamental consideration in your decission making. Which parts of the body do you want emphasise and why. A full skirt will draw attention to the waist, forming an arroow shape between waist and hern. Wide shoulders introduce the same results and can also make the hips look narrower. The waist itself does not have to be fixed as it is automatically placed. It can be displaced through curved side seams for the raising and lowering of a horizontal  waist. The silhouette can also be  affected by using fabric to creeate volume around the body or  by makinng it close fitting to accentuate it.

Choosing the size of a shoulder pad or where the waiste is accentuated may seem like small decissions to make, but these subtle  choices abouut silhouette give your cloothes uniifying identity and stop them from becoming generic shapes.
Choosing the ssubleties of  silhouette and cut is essential, but some designers choose to  make shoulder statements by working far  more sculpturally on the body. Leigh Bowery was an Australian designer and performancee artist who died in 1994. He appeaard to be completely  unconcerned with convention or perceptions osf taste, possibly he never trained formally in fashion design. Bowery constantly experimented with his own silhouette, augmenting and consructing it,using boning, padding and even gaffer tape. He own displayed his own flesh.

The clothes would often fit because he altered the shape of his own body . It,s more about silhouette, alteretion then restriction.
